It’s neat that some U.S. officials have criticized the military overthrow of the democratically elected Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya. It would also be really neat if anyone mentioned that the general in charge of the coup is a graduate of the School of the Americas, (now the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation!), in Fort Benning, Georgia. This elite, tax-payer funded U.S. institution has produced some of Latin America’s most terrifying thugs; from Pinochet’s torture squads to those classy dudes who raped and killed the group of Jesuit nuns in El Salvador.
With the federal budget cuts in education really affecting our schools and universities, I wonder if SOA has been forced to cut back on any of their electives.
