Sad Anniversary Dance Party

The capital hillbillies didn’t let these upcoming somber anniversaries get in the way of a good dance party over the weekend; here are some photos of a basement birthday party at something-and-Alder, in which everyone wore stick-on Bindis and danced like Shiva. People were just kind of milling around in this dank little basement, playing a church organ, until Edip Kemal Oner showed up with two self-powered speakers and a laptop. After that the fun became so intense that the insulation literally came out of the ceiling. Or maybe it was already like that.

I didn’t realize that today was the sixth anniversary of Rachel Corrie’s death; she was the Evergreen student that was killed by a bulldozer while trying to protest the destruction of Palestinian homes. Here is an interview with her parents on Olympia’s public radio station, KAOS, from earlier today. Thanks to professor Michael Vavrus for sending this link.

Double Sad: Today is also the 41st anniversary of the My Lai massacre, in which the U.S. military shocked the world by slaughtering over 500 unarmed vietnamese civilians, mostly women and children and elderly. Big props to my Dad for dodging the draft back in 1968, and becoming a freight-hopping, rock-hounding bum.  Charles Hoag is an anti-war hero.
